Ottawa County Awarded $400,000 in Brownfield Grant Funds
Ottawa County was recently awarded $400,000 in grant funds from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The monies are to be utilized for conducting environmental assessments at prospective Brownfield sites. Brownfields are properties where the expansion, redevelopment or reuse of the properties may be complicated by the presence of hazardous substances and/or petroleum products. The Ottawa County Brownfield Program is currently accepting applications, with approved projects funded on a first-come first-serve basis until the funds are used up.
Eligible activities under the program:
- Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs)
- Baseline Environmental Assessments (BEAs)
- Due Care Plans
- Brownfield Plans
- Other cleanup plans
Eligibility Criteria:
- Project must be in Ottawa County, Michigan
- Current property owner not responsible for the contamination
- Proposed project demonstrates financial need for funding
- Proposed project demonstrates community benefits (jobs, goods/services/amenities, reduction in health hazard, returning idle site to reuse, etc.).

- Existing nonliable property owners
- Prospective property owners
- Developers
- Local units of government
- Non-profits
