Michigan UST Facilities Must Have Certified Class A, B, and C Operators by August 2012

1 min read

Based upon mandates from the federal government, Michigan recently amended its underground storage tank (UST) rules to require that each UST facility have Class A, Class B, and Class C operators.  These Michigan rules became effective on May 8, 2012, with a deadline for operator certification of August 8, 2012.

Beginning on August 9, 2012, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) inspectors will be checking for compliance with this new certification requirement as a part of their UST facility inspections.  Due to the compressed timeframe for training and testing, the DEQ has stated that enforcement actions will not be taken until January 2, 2013.

Class A and B operators must be properly trained and pass a written test in order to be certified.  Class C operators must be properly trained, but are not required to take a test.  The Michigan-specific testing dates/times, registration requirements, and testing sites are found at the following website:  www.iccsafe.org.
